Vocabulary and phrases for World Oceans DayJune 8, 2023 is World Oceans Day. This special day is dedicated to the incredible beauty and importance of our oceans. Did you know oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface? And that oceans are home to 94% of all life on Earth? Let’s jump into the fascinating world of ocean vocabulary and phrases for World Oceans Day 2023!

Freshwater is a water body that contains very little salt, or no salt at all. 

Salt water

Salt water is a type of water that contains a significant amount of salt, which means you cannot drink it. The largest saltwater body is the ocean. 

The importance of the oceans 

Oceans play an important role in many areas of our lives. 

  1. Oceans provide us with various jobs and industries, for example: tourism, fishing, shipping, and sport. Fishing provides a livelihood for millions of people worldwide and is a significant source of food for many communities. Sports such as scuba diving and surfing are enjoyed by millions of people around the world, whether watching or participating. 
  2. Oceans act as climate regulators, absorbing and storing large amounts of heat, which helps to regulate global temperatures. They also generate a substantial portion of the oxygen we breathe. 
  3. Oceans are used as a source of renewable energy through technologies like tidal power and offshore wind farms. 
  4. They can be a very important source of freshwater in some regions, by removing the salt from the water so it is drinkable.
